There are some easy ways of lowering the amount of carbon we use, particularly from packaging. When I go to the supermarket, I try to avoid buying items sold in plastic bags, especially apples and avocados, which are fine without packaging. By doing this, I feel like I'm helping the environment in some way.

You can also often save money if you buy items without excessive packaging. For example, bananas wrapped in plastic usually cost more:

  • One banana, without plastic wrapping costs around 13p
  • A pack of 5 wrapped bananas costs between 75p and 80p.

Morrisons supermarket has stated it will phase out all its banana packaging in favour of paper bands (to keep bunches together). Bananas are the second most commonly bought fresh product in Morrisons stores, and the change will save 180 tonnes of plastic per year.

What small change in what you buy at the supermarket would be better for our planet and save you money?
